Before the Live Earth concert and all the hype about the "I'm not a Plastic Bag" bag, how many of us actually actively reused, reduced and recycled? I have to admit though I reused plastic bags before throwing them away, I had to throw away alot of paper used during revision or study (they were used on both sides and every little available space was filled!) simply because it was too troublesome to bring them to a recycling centre. Recently, however, recycling bins appeared in my estate! Whee, now I can keep paper, bottles and cans and bring them out to dump in the bins.
I've also noticed that cashiers are asking if we need a bag, instead of just giving us one anyway. However, this does not apply to all cashiers. Just recently I bought a tube of sweets at a certain convenience store and told the cashier I didn't need a bag (she didn't ask me if I needed one). For some reason, the plastic bag was already in her hand when I said this and she gave me a dirty look and threw the bag down on the counter. Well, I have to say she's rather efficient. Quick hands are great for when there are long queues.
If you feel that you're not doing enough for the Earth, you can visit Care2.com's
Click to Donate section, where for every free click you make, sponsors donate to causes such as stopping global warming, saving homeless pets and saving the rainforests. If you sign up for an account you can even track your progress. My secondary school teacher introduced this website to the class and I've been clicking daily ever since (you are allowed one click per cause per day). Since it doesn't take much time and effort, you should too.
