Anecdotes Of Life

Happy teachers' day!
Friday, August 31, 2007

today my first lesson was at 11.30am so i went back to my secondary school for a very little while just to pass some gifts to a few teachers. my music teacher was especially happy to see me =) she said "you're very good, you never forget me, and i also haven forgotten you" haha, i'm not sure if that is a direct quote anot cos i can't really remember... Oh then i was talking to my sec 4 (i think ) PE teacher and he suddenly asked, "Have you alwayz been this tall?" and i said, "err...ya.." LOL.

I haven been back to the school for a while and much has changed, the teacher's have new lockers outside the staff rooms now and there are painted designs in the toilet walls and on the staircase steps. Most of the walls also have a fresh coat of paint. Looks quite nice. Too bad i didn't get to go back to my JC too, class ended too late..

Also, i dunno why most people think i'm not a Singaporean, but i was in the canteen and the auntie from the burger stall asked us (me and my friends) if we are from Thailand. Then i said no, only 1 guy is from Thailand. Then so she asked me if i'm Indonesian! haha mostly people ask me if i'm from China so this is a first.

oh and now the guard sitting at the foyer to take down visitor's names even has a nice wooden table with some equipment. Previously he was just using a few of those classroom tables...
It was nice going back even though it was only awhile.too bad i couldn't ask all my friends along though since i had to rush to school for lessons..oh well, i wish all teachers out there a very Happy Teachers' Day!

me & my lappie
Sunday, August 26, 2007

Haha, lappie as in laptop! Finally got one of my own..=) itz a Hp student promotion, check it out if you're interested..i believe the promotion is still on. If your matirculation card is approved by HP, you can get the notebook at $1499! it usually sells for $2299. What i like about it is the fingerprint recognition, i can log in with juz a swipe of my finger! totally cool ya.

Some quick specs:
1 GB RAM
160 GB harddisk
1.8Ghz processor
12.1 inch screen

ok well the screen might be a little small to some, but i find it ok. you can always adjust the font size if you feel that you are going blind. ^^ oh btw, itz a tablet pc so you can write instead of type if you hate typing. however in my opinion typing is much faster la.

A poem by me...
Sunday, August 19, 2007

I was helping my younger bro with his geog homework last night and he was supposed to write a poem about protecting the forests...so anywae i wrote a poem as an example for him and last night he refused to use it, saying it was too much like literature and not like geography. Forgive me la, i only took geog in sec 1 & 2. And isn't a poem supposed to be literature?? And then this afternoon he decided to use my poem after all. Must be too lazy to think of his own. But he modified it slightly, and in my opinion he made it sound weird but if he likes it...The poem i wrote goes like this:

Protecting the forests
I am home to many creatures,
The crawling, flying, climbing and gliding.
They need my shelter, a place to hide,
When storms and monsters threaten their lives.

I hold my branches far and wide,
Providing shade for those below.
Because of me the air is fresh.
How can you bear to cut me down?

Leave me alone! for I am innocent.
Don't burn or slash or cut or saw!
I am helpless, I cannot run,
Please spare my life, oh noble one!

I miss my home, I miss my friends,
I don't want to be a paper plane!
So I beg of you, my dear friends,
Observe the 3Rs and help me stand tall!

ok i know itz not that good la, some parts sound abit funny...but i did it in 10 mins...

Raining Cats and Dogs
Thursday, August 16, 2007

wow it was storming so heavily this morning at Boon Lay! And the wind was so strong that everyone got drenched just coming out of the MRT! can you believe that? the platform floors were totally flooded and the MRT staff had to make announcements every few minutes to remind people to stand behind the yellow line.

when i reached the 179 berth, i was lucky that the bus just came so i managed to get a seat..=) speaking of which, ytd i had a morning lecture at 8.30am, so i was thinking since it's earlier it should be less crowded. but boy was i wrong. 179 is at berth 8, and the queue stretched from berth 8 all the way to 7 and 6 and almost reaching 5. When i was walking there from the MRT station i juz saw this long line and thought that must be the queue for 179 so i juz joined it. And sure enough it was. But the good thing was that 3 buses came consecutively so it wasn't too crowded..

oh yes, and i finally managed to drop symmetry and crystals! i'm now taking a business minor elective...but this one is a weekly 4 hr seminar..=( oh wells you can't have everything.

Happy Birthday Singapore!
Thursday, August 9, 2007

Yay! National Day is finally here! Can't wait to watch the NDP tonight! =)

Hmm, i'm not sure if everyone thinks the same way i do but i find that our National Day songs have a certain 'feel' to them, like you can recognise a National Day song when you hear it. This year's national day song for example, I first heard it in a minimart, and immediately i could recognise it for what it was. I was like, "that sounds like a national day song, is it the new one this year?", and my mother who was with me told me it was! And i'm not even talking about the lyrics, which might give you some clues, just the melody in general...haha maybe i'm the only one who feels this way.

Anyway, once again, Happy Birthday Singapore!

Symmetry & Crystals...
Wednesday, August 8, 2007

I had my first science elective lecture today on symmetry and crystals. I actually wanted forensic science but sadly there were no vacancies left. I hope someone drops it!

So anyway, it was a 3 hr lecture, but luckily there was a short break after each hour, so it wasn't so bad. 3 hrs non stop would have been a killer. But what is symmetry and crystals all about? Well...itz mostly about tesselation in crytals, as in the atoms and how they bond. Very chemistry stuff. It's rather interesting, though a tad chim. The first 2 parts of the lecture was ok, but by the 3rd part, more chim stuff was introduced and I was slightly lost.

The thing about this course is that there is no final year exam, but instead online exams every 2-3 weeks. That means a total of about 4 assessments in the whole semester. I'm not sure if that's a good thing anot.On one hand, I'll have 1 less exam to study for at the end of the semester, but on the other, i'll have to study my notes every week to get prepared for the online assessments...

First day of school
Monday, August 6, 2007

Today I woke up at 7am and rushed out of the house at 7.50am (cos i was supposed to leave at 7.45am) and almost thought i was gonna be late. But luckily I reached on time for the first tutorial. However, after waiting in the tutorial room for a few minutes, someone came in and told us there are no tutorials for the first week. -_-" could have told me that earlier then i could have slept for another hour.

Oh ya, on welcome day i met one of my seniors who was from the same secondary school as me. I didn't know him in secondary school la, just see before around school. My sec sch friend who knew him introduced us then after that he said he sort of remembers seeing me performing with the CO (Chinese Orchestra) b4. lol maybe cos i sit right in front... Anyway itz lucky that I met a senior, so i was less lost around the school. He's been a great help. =)

Tomorrow I have a 1 hr lecture at 9.30am, and then a 4 hour break b4 the next lecture! omg i dunno what am i gonna do...

What a day!
Friday, August 3, 2007

Had trouble falling asleep last night, was tossing and turning in bed till about 6+ a.m. then finally fell asleep. And had to wake up at 7.30a.m. to go to school for the Freshmen Welcome Day...yawnz.

When I arrived at Boon Lay bus interchange, I had to run after bus 179. Let me, at this moment, explain that Boon Lay bus interchange is shaped as a U, with the MRT at one end of the U. And, 179 stops at the other end of the U shape! Grrr...>=(
but luckily there was a long queue so I managed to get on the bus. This is about the only time I'll ever be thankful for a long queue.

So anyway the welcome ceremony was rather fun, at least the last part was. The first part was mostly welcome speeches by various important people, during which I was trying hard not to fall asleep. However the performances after that managed to wake me up. And we got free school windbreakers! =)

Lessons officially start next Monday..I hope I can find all the various lecture theatres and tutorial rooms..

You realise how small Singapore is when...
Thursday, August 2, 2007

...you meet your primary school friend whom you have not seen for 6 years in your JC. And she ends up in the same class as you.

...you come from a secondary school in the east, go to a JC all the way in the west and meet your secondary school mate there just when you thought you were the only one from your sec sch.

...you go to university and once again meet your sec schmate who become your JC schmate who is now your Uni schmate.

cool huh? Btw, in case you are wondering, I did experience the above stated scenarios. =)

More frequent buses?
Wednesday, August 1, 2007

It's good news right? Public buses arriving more frequently? Well...it might not neccessarily be good news, perhaps a mix of both good and bad.

I remember when I was in secondary school, it was a rush to get to the bus stop once the school bell rings, in order to beat the crowd. If you are lucky, the bus arrives not too long after you reach the bus-stop, if not, you have to wait sometimes up to 20+ mins. And when the bus finally arrives, the driver just ignores all the flagging hands and zooms past! Can you believe that? I mean the bus was practically empty! For some reason he must be behind schedule and therefore chose to ignore the crowd at the bus-stop. So you see, if buses have to arrive at a shorter time interval, they might just choose to skip some stops if they are late. But then again, the wait for the next bus wouldn't be so long either.

I've never really liked taking buses. The MRT is more predictable. No traffic jams, estimated travel time mostly accurate and no skipping of stops. And the best thing is, trains sometimes arrive at 1 min intervals during peak hours! With trains I can plan my arrival time down to the minute and almost always be on time.
