Anecdotes Of Life

Excuse me, do you speak Engrish?
Wednesday, October 31, 2007

Engrish.com is a very entertaining website full of funny grammatical mistakes made on signs, menus, sweet wrappers and such, funny names of products and just generally rofl stuff. Mostly features stuff from Japan since the Japanese are fond of printing a short sentence or 2 in English, or Engrish, on their products. It's a great site to visit when you need a good laugh cos most of the mistakes made are really laugh out loud hilarious!

I wouldn't drink this...who knows which human was used to make this water...

lol...better take a good long bath after this

I hope this cup is clean...

There's a law that lets you get cut by electricity?? And you want me to cooperate? are you out of your mind?!

Why bother reading xiaxue's blog?
Sunday, October 28, 2007

I don't bother reading xiaxue's blog, because everyone else can do it for you. If there's anything of interest on her blog, someone else will probably blog about it and then it will most likely be one of the top 10 posts in ping.sg. You can then read about it on their blogs, so why bother reading xiaxue's?

Though I have to admit she has some interesting posts (like pink Ikea furniture!), she is also one very good reason not to post pics or identify yourself on your blog(unless you don't mind being called a disgusting blogger).I also don't understand why she has to use vulgarities so frequently...

Actually I also quite envy her for being a full time blogger la, i mean how cool is that? Earning an income blogging your days away...So..love her?no. Hate her?no. But I guess I also don't read her blog directly cos i reckon she has enough traffic as it is liao..=p

(this is just a random post written cos a post about a post on xiaxue's blog made it to top post in ping.sg again!)

Major flaw in 2004 Bio 'O' level paper
Thursday, October 25, 2007

All the recent hype over the PSLE maths questions has reminded me of an unforgivable mistake in my Biology 'O' level paper. There was this one question where according to a graph(i think), the pupil gets larger as the person got closer to the light source. I think even someone who doesn't take bio would know that this is impossible. The pupil getting larger means allowing more light to enter, and if that happens as you get closer to the light source, you'll probably become blind eventually.

I was very confused when I got to this question, and a few people raised their hands and asked the invigilators about it. But those invigilators don't know anything about bio anyway. So I just answered the question according to the given data, which means the answers were nonsensical but were correct according to the data. Then after that the error was announced and marks for that question were not included. I can't remember exactly how many marks the question was worth, but it was quite alot! Due to a silly mistake, marks for an easy question were not considered.

I believe the 'O' level papers were set way before the actual exam, so why weren't they checked properly? A minor mistake would have been slightly more forgivable, but this is such a glaring mistake that i'm shocked it wasn't noticed. Makes you wonder if the papers are actually reviewed after they have been set.

Why aren't there any nice new pink phones?
Sunday, October 21, 2007

I've been looking out for new pink handphones but there don't seem to be any. (or maybe i'm just really blind and cannot find them? do let me know if that's the case =]) My current phone is the Nokia 7360, the lowest end phone of the 3 in the L'amour collection.

It's nice and all but doesn't have bluetooth, only has a vga camera, and has a memory space of 4MB. I can't even install super puzzle bobble on my phone, that being my current addiction, and have to play it on my friends' phones.

Actually when the L'amour collection was first introduced, I wanted to get the clamshell one, that is, the Nokia 7390.

This one has both infrared and bluetooth, a 2.0 megapixel camera and 21MB internal memory+slot for memory card. Sooo much better than my phone. However, the reason why I did not get this, but got the candybar phone was simply because it was too expensive. My father has this rule where i'm only allowed to buy handphones that will cost $100 and less after trade-in, I guess it will also apply even if i use my own $$. But my mother has the previledge of owning the nokia 7390. I personally prefer clamshell phones but it's rather hard to find nice ones. And even harder still to find nice pink ones. Oh well..till then i'll have to live without bluetooth and super puzzle bobble..

Guilty unless proven innocent?
Wednesday, October 17, 2007

Referring to my earlier post on my Java lab assignment 1, I looked through the lines of code in my program that were found to be similar to the other student's today. I must say I was very upset when I found out that the similar parts were all the parts where I had to use formulae and java classes. Come on, of course the formulae will be the same! they're called that for a reason you know, I can't just change it! When I tried to argue this point, my tutor pointed out that the structure of the program at those sections were similar too. But, this doesn't make sense at all! I mean, if I have a formula like a=5+b, and b is found by the formula b=3+4, obviously I would find out the value of b first before going on to calculate the value of a right? So how is that copying? Isn't that just the logical way of doing things??>=(

And, my grade is still going to be pinalised!!! Seems like I have to talk to the professor personally to appeal..sigh...This is because my tutor said that I can't bargain with him for my grade as he does not have the power to make the final decision, and also he can't not pinalise me just because I said I didn't copy. This is because he has to be fair to everyone. May I ask, how is this fair to me at all? He keeps saying he believes I didn't copy, so why are you still pinalising me? And he also said that the prof was lenient for this first assignment, and thus my grade was only lowered slightly, for in other cases a straight 'F' would have resulted. And since i'm on the watchlist, I would get an F for the next assignment if this happens. But of course there's the oral assessment part, and since I will be able to explain my code, I'll probably either not fail that badly or barely pass. Maybe I shouldn't even bother doing assignment 2. Just fail me now.

Unfortunatedly, I don't think this is a case that can be appealed through email, though I would have preferred that. Appealing in person is disadvantageous to me as I tend to be unable to control my emotions, and being upset makes me less able to argue and convince. Through email however, one has the sufficient time to organise one's thought properly before replying, and the reply can be worded in a convincing manner. Also it doesn't help that i'm not assertive by nature, having once scored a -54 on an assertiveness test where the score ranges from -90 to 90, the more negative being more unassertive. Maybe I should hire a lawyer..LOL..-_-"

Binary Code in Uncyclopedia
Sunday, October 14, 2007

Uncyclopedia is a very interesting parody of the popular Wikipedia. If you haven't visited it before, start by visiting the page on Binary. =) The entire page is written out in Binary code! Don't worry if you don't understand it, click here for a nifty translator to help to decipher the code. Ok, now that you are armed with a chunk of binary code and a translator, get translating! The whole page is actually full of hilarious nonsense so it's rather fun to translate...=p I didn't actually translate every part of it( itz so long!) but here are some highlights:

"Binary is a code based on the letters of the acronym "LOL", but with the L's written in lowercase." lOl...

And somewhere near the middle of the article,
"Dude why are you reading this all the way down here? Okay it wasn't that far down here but you shouldn't even be reading this at all. If you aren't using a translator, then it's pretty sad that you read the whole thing. In fact, it's sad that you even know binary, what kind of life do you have? I know the other guy said that knowing binary is cool or something, but seriously, what kind of life do you have to have enough time to know binary? Seriously, stop reading this, right now. I don't care if you want to read the whole thing. Just stop reading."

Right below that there's a section written in l33t which is actually quite hard to read...
"4f73r 7h3 d3(4y 0f 1337, 7h3 7ru3 h4x0r5 574r73d 70 wr173 1n 81n4ry 1337 r47h3r 7h4n 337, 450 (43d 81n337, wh1(h 4((1d3n7y 450 m34n5 "1 4m 1337" 1n 63rm4n. 7h3 (hur(h 0f 5474n 8313v35 y0u (4n 533 7h3 83457 1n 7h3 p4773rn5 0f 0n35 4nd z3r035 0f 7h3 8183 3n(0d3d 1n 807h 81n4ry 4nd 1337. 7h15 f4(7 15 d15pu73d 8y J35u5 -. (hr157."

(After the decay of leet, the true haxors started to write in binary leet rather than leet, also called binleet, which accidently also means "I am leet" in German. The church of satan believes you can see the beast in the patterns of ones and zeroes of the bible encoded in both binary and leet. This fact is disputed by Jesus H.Christ.)

For those who don't know, "haxors" is leetspeak for "hackers".

Visit the uncyclopedia page if you are too free and are interested to read more silly stuff..=p

Amazing 5-year-old kid DDR
Thursday, October 11, 2007

This kid is truly amazing! He's only 5 years old and is already such a pro.

no wonder the Japanese are so good at arcade games! they 'train' their kids from such a young age...Itz actually quite amazing how many arcades there are in Japan. Every street every corner you turn, there's an arcade.Oh and those machines where you grab a toy with a crane thingy? do you know that they actually pin the toys down??! I'm not sure if this is the case in Singapore, but in Japan, the soft toys in these machines are pinned down discreetly using tiny pins. this means that you'll probably not get them on first try, and have to wait till the pins are loosened. Maybe everyone there is too pro so they have to do that if not they'll lose money lol.

DDR actually looks quite fun, I want a dancing pad at home! I don't wanna go to arcades to play cos people will crowd around and stare! I don't like people looking at me ><. besides, i'll be such a noob. The nearest i've come to playing ddr is an online game, Super Dancer Online. Since i don't have the dancing pad i can only use my fingers to play. Itz a rather fun game, you can even connect the dancing pad to your com if you have one. Oh and the interesting thing is that your character gets fat if you don't dance often lol. But of course there are things like slimming potions and such to get you back in shape.

I used to play the Malaysian version of that game but somehow the site was just abandoned for months so I switched to the Thailand version. Fret not if you don't understand Thai, itz mostly in English. The only thing is that you might not understand what the other players are saying. I actually feel quite bad sometimes cos i think they are talking to me but i ignored them since i dun understand...=p

Why is this happening to me?! =(
Wednesday, October 10, 2007

My first lab assignment and already I might be accused of plagiarism. Apparently my program code had 105 lines that were similar to that of another student's from another class. I don't even know who that student is and that that class existed, so how can it be that I copied? And anyway I took computing in JC and am able to do all my labs by myself so what reason do I have to copy?

It is inevitable that some parts of everyone's program codes will look the same, cos afterall, how many ways can you implement java classes or do a loop?? So i suggested that maybe it was just a weird coincidence. But my tutor said that the others in the class who had similarities with other people had only about 40-50+ lines similar at max. Mine was the highest in the class. haiz...what have i done to deserve this?

So my tutor advised me to be more careful during assignment 2, as he said that someone might have copied my program if i forgot to logout from the lab computer. However, I did my assignment 1 at home! so that cannot be the reason. Also, how am I supposed to be careful if I didn't copy in the first place and don't know which were the parts that were similar? Hopefully my tutor can get back to me soon about the parts that were suppposedly "copied". Maybe it's my use of variable names, or my style of coding. That means I have to change my style? perhaps i should write it in such a complicated and long winded way that no one will ever have the same code as me. And I should use variable names such as "abc" and"xyz" that are not meaningful and self-explanatory.

Because of this my grade might be pinalised, though my tutor said he would speak with the professor to see if i will be given the benefit of the doubt. And, i'm also now placed on the watchlist so if such an incident happens again during the upcoming assignment 2, i don't think they will be so lenient.=( I really really hope they don't minus my marks because of something i didn't do. However, even if my grades are not affected, i will still be on the watchlist.I feel so tainted...I've never been one to break rules, and now, i have "cheated" during an assessment. T_T :-(

Any new products you would like to see on the market?
Saturday, October 6, 2007

Are there any new products or service you would like to see on the market? Or perhaps some improvements you would like to see in existing products? Well now is the time to voice out your ideas. I have a marketing project where I have to think of a new or improved product/service to market so I just wanna get the opinion of everyone in order to get a general idea of what people want. Any and all ideas will be much appreciated! thanks!

And...just for fun, how about some wild and out of this world ideas if you don't have any that you think are possible? =p

Electronics Principles

I have a dislike(lol hate sounded too extreme) for Electronics Principles. It is physics. I don't like physics. Cos i dun understand physics.

During this week's lab there was oral assessment for a bunch of random people and I happened to be one of the unlucky few. Ok maybe it was because I kept asking the teacher things and seemed so blur. So when he came to assess me, I could only answer about half of his questions I think, and it was the easier ones that I could answer. For the rest of the questions, I was asking him to explain to me instead of me explaining to him lol. But at the end he still said "Good, good". But i think he says that to everyone...

Haiz, every eletronics lab, I can never do everything by myself without getting help, and I can never finish within the 2 hour slot allocated to my class. Usually will drag to 3 or 4 hours even. Luckily there aren't any other classes after us so we can just stay on to finish, otherwise would have to come back another day.

New bus service 179A
Monday, October 1, 2007

Starting today, there's a new bus service 179A that goes straight to NTU, skipping all the stops in between. So now those going to NTU by 179A can queue at the previous 179 berth, and those taking 179 can queue one berth further where 199 is situated.

Although NTU students were informed of this through email, the general public was not, and there weren't even any signs to indicate this new bus service. Ok actually i think I saw a piece of paper announcing this stuck to the railings of the previous 179 berth last week, but they should have put up signs at the MRT station! I mean the queue is mostly so long that people will just assume the long queue is the 179 queue and won't even know that there is actually a 179A.

So, today there was this elderly man on the 179A bus, and didn't know there was a difference in stops. One stop before entering NTU, the man frantically pressed the stop bell but the driver just kept going (as he should). But the thing was, the driver didn't even bother to tell the man that the bus was 179A and not 179 and thus does not stop at that particular stop. When the elderly man went forwards to ask, the driver even waved his hand impatiently and said that the bus doesn't stop there. The poor old man got down at the first NTU stop looking annoyed.

SBS should have at least put up some signs in prominent positions near the MRT or along the pathway to the 179 berth so that people who have not been informed of the new service would not join the queue blindly. I'm sure the elderly man is not the only one who made a mistake today.
